The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Bold women’s hockey team won 1-0 against the Brock Badgers, improving their record to 2-6.
Coming into tonight’s game, the Bold faced a tough challenge against the Badgers, who were looking to extend their three-game winning streak.
“[The team] talked a lot this week about when we take the lead, how do we need to know what moment we’re in here and be able to adjust accordingly,” Bold head coach Lisa Haley noted. “It was great to see the level of execution on the defensive side and for us to be able to make that our identity.”
Less than two minutes into the first period, the Bold got their first power play due to a head contact call on forward Randyll Strongman. Despite applying ample pressure, the Bold were unable to capitalize.
The penalties for the Badgers were persistent, and with a boarding penalty, TMU earned another chance to gain a lead.
Just when the Bold seemed dormant with their shots, forward Britnie Yammine woke the team up. Not long after TMU’s advantage wound down, defender Dayle Chinnick dished a quick-fire pass to Yammine, who fired it past Brock’s netminder, giving the Bold a 1-0 lead as the first period ended.
“It’s definitely a confidence booster for everybody in the room,” said Yammine, who notched her second goal of the season. “Right now, we have a lion mentality; nobody wants to be a follower. We all want to be leaders.”
Entering the second period, TMU put their special teams to work. Five minutes in, the Bold found themselves at a disadvantage as forward Ava Caputo was sent to the penalty box for tripping.
TMU’s penalty kill held firm, and after another penalty for roughing after the whistle, just eight minutes later, the Bold still held on to a one-goal lead.
“Special teams were solid tonight,” Haley noted. “There’s gonna be a few [penalties], and we lean into our penalty kill a lot. I believe they really pulled through for us today.”
Facing a 14-8 deficit in shots heading into the third, the Bold remained committed to protecting their lead. As Strongman attempted to even the score, forward Katie Leroux took matters into her own hands, diving onto the ice to prevent the puck from moving forward any further.
Although Brock was applying pressure, they could not get past goalie Sydney Pyburn, who recorded her first shutout of the season.
“My dad always tells me being a goalie is ninety per cent mental and ten per cent physical,” Pyburn noted. “Half the time [Brock is] shooting the puck, and then the next, then you know, skadoosh, I gotta make another save, it’s crazy.”
